Increased emission intensity can compensate for the presence of noise in human click-based echolocation

Abstract Echolocating bats adapt their emissions to succeed in noisy environments. In the present study we investigated if echolocating humans can detect a sound-reflecting surface presence of noise and intensity echolocation (i.e. clicks) changes systematic pattern. We tested people who were blind had experience echolocation, as well sighted no prior study. used an echo-detection paradigm where participants listened binaural recordings sounds they did not make own click emissions), echoes changed adaptively based on participant performance (intensity was yoked emissions). found that emission systematically increase compensate for weaker relative background noise. fact, increased so spectral power exceeded by 12 dB 4-kHz 5-kHz frequency bands. The effects same across all groups, suggesting this effect occurs independently long-time with echolocation. Our findings demonstrate first time echolocate suggest one potential strategy deal is maintain signal-to-noise ratio certain components echoes.
